ESP 555 Classic Autism/High Functioning
In this course candidates examine the unique skills, abilities, and needs of individuals on the autism spectrum. The course emphasizes the variety of presentations along the spectrum, and examines strategies for supporting neurodivergent students in the K-12 education system. Candidates will gain an understanding of the history and sociopolitical context for supporting neurodivergent K-12 students, and candidates will be asked to critically evaluate current methods and strategies for cultural responsiveness and their ability to create empowering learning spaces for autistic students in in the classroom. This course emphasizes listening to and amplifying the voices of those who are neurodivergent when evaluating systems and their effects on students’ experiences in a classroom environment.

Outcomes
- This course will prepare students to:
- Understand the varied presentations, unique skills, abilities, and needs of neurodivergent students.
- Develop an awareness of historical and sociopolitical contexts for current autism programs.
- Evaluate current programs, methods, and strategies for cultural responsiveness and ability to create empowering learning spaces for neurodivergent students.
- Create a personal growth plan for further learning about autism.
