ESP 558 Instructional Accommodations and Modifications for Special Ed

This course provides teachers pursuing a special education endorsement with the pedagogical foundations, strategies, and understanding to modify curriculum and make accommodations to the learning environment. This course emphasizes the identification of students’ needs, developing appropriate strategies, and collaboration between appropriate staff members. An emphasis is placed on accommodations and modifications to general education curriculum and environments in order to ensure inclusion, equity, and access for students in special education.

Outcomes

  1. This course will prepare students to:
  2. Select, adapt and modify individualized assessment strategies including accommodations, technology, and alternative assessment.
  3. Use strategies, including collaboration with families and other agencies to facilitate all transitions for individuals with disabilities.
  4. Sequence, implement and evaluate individual learning outcomes, including the appropriate use of Common Core Standards.
  5. Develop and select instructional content, resources, and strategies that are aligned with IEP goals and respond to cultural, linguistic, and gender differences.
  6. Use and model research-based strategies and interventions to facilitate inclusion in the least restrictive environment including appropriate accommodations, curriculum modifications, and alternatives.
  7. Prepare lesson plans, organize materials, and monitor implementation of specially designed instruction for self, paraeducators, and general educators.
  8. Select, adapt, and use instructional strategies and materials according to characteristics of the learner including social, emotional, adaptive, cognitive, academic, and behavioral.
