ECC 513 Ethics and Law for School-based Practice

This course introduces students to Canadian law and ethical decision making for professional practice in school-based settings. Utilizing Canadian as well as provincial education ministry codes of ethics and education law, students develop the knowledge and tools required to make good judgments on legal and ethical matters within the school setting.  Case studies on ethical decision making and addressing legal issues in schools are evaluated.

1. This course will prepare students to:
2. Demonstrate understanding of informed consent, confidentiality, and public disclosure
3. Apply ethical codes of practice to case studies
4. Evaluate how learning requires exploration of one’s identity
5. Evaluate rights and responsivities of students, parents, and school personnel
6. Create a plan of action based on a legal issue in school
7. Assess a process for ethical decision making and apply ethical codes of practice when faced with an ethical dilemma.
8. Develop resources that will keep the practicing school building administrator abreast of legal challenges and changes in education.
9. Adapt individual differences in their decisions and actions and be able to negotiate across these differences.
