ESP 540 Teaming and Transitions

This course allows teacher candidates to analyze and reflect on the collaborative relationships that will be necessary for developing effective programming for special education students in and beyond educational settings.  The course will allow candidates to explore the possibilities for collaborative practices with other professionals in the educational setting, inclusion of family members as part of the team, including student voice in decision-making, and working with community agencies/specialists in special education programming.  Topics include supervision and collaboration with paraprofessionals and other school support staff, facilitating student-centered planning, and collaboration with family and community stakeholders to increase success of special education students as they transition between grade levels and into adulthood.  This course will provide candidates with the knowledge to facilitate collaborative practices in their classroom setting for and with special education students. This course includes components of state requirements for certification.

Outcomes

  1. This course will prepare students to:
  2. Identify effective methods for collaborating with various stakeholders in special education programming (teachers, school psychologists, specialists, support staff, counselors, community supports, etc.).
  3. Analyze the process of student-centered planning for special education students in P-12 settings.
  4. Synthesize the core components of the legal post-secondary transition process for special education students (ages 16-21).
  5. Create a personal leadership philosophy that will guide their facilitation and collaboration with various stakeholders.
