ESP 555 Classic Autism/High Functioning *

In this course candidates examine the unique skills, abilities, and needs of individuals on the autism spectrum. The course emphasizes the variety of presentations along the spectrum, and examines strategies for supporting neurodivergent students in the K-12 education system.  Candidates will gain an understanding of the history and sociopolitical context for supporting neurodivergent K-12 students, and candidates will be asked to critically evaluate current methods and strategies for cultural responsiveness and their ability to create empowering learning spaces for autistic students in in the classroom. This course emphasizes listening to and amplifying the voices of those who are neurodivergent when evaluating systems and their effects on students’ experiences in a classroom environment.

  5. Create a personal growth plan for further learning about autism.
