COUN 603 Expressive Arts in Counseling *

This course will examine and apply the use of creative arts in counseling relationships. Particular attention will be given to imagery and visual art, music, literature, drama, play, humor, and movement as interventions and applications to various mental health and wellness issues. Students will be given an opportunity to explore and apply various expressive creative arts in their work with clients of various ages, abilities, and mental health issues in a variety of settings. Specific creative art therapeutic techniques will be demonstrated and explored through experiential activities and assignments.

Outcomes

  1. This course will prepare students to:
  2. a) Explore, assess, and implement various creative art therapeutic techniques in a variety of counseling settings.
  3. b) Research, evaluate, and demonstrate various creative art techniques in combination to extend in helping relationships.
  4. c) Develop/increase awareness, knowledge, and skills in creative art activities and techniques that can improve therapeutic insight and gains in counseling relationships.
  5. d) Practice and collaborate on various creative art activities to further develop self-awareness of counseling style, delivery, and therapeutic skills.
