PSY 321 Race and Ethnic Issues (SS)

This course evaluates the sociological theories and concepts used to explain and describe race and ethnic relations. It will also consider the sources of racial and ethnic conflict, and the historical experiences and current conditions for various minority groups in the United States.

1. This course will prepare students to:
2. Discuss antiassimilationist models and their implications for the society and social policies.
3. Evaluate various assimilation theories and models.
4. Demonstrate understanding of the dynamics of power and oppression and their relationship to ethnicity and culture.
5. Discuss the historical experiences and current conditions of various minority groups.
6. Identify factors that lead to minority group formation.
7. Discuss various public policy programs designed to reduce inequality as well as controversies about them.
8. Demonstrate understanding of discrimination and prejudice and theories of them.
