ETC 505 School Law

This course examines public school law with an emphasis on the rights and responsibilities of students and teachers.  Candidates analyze current issues and case studies specific to public education, special education and the education of recent immigrants for positive inclusion in a public school.  Candidates learn professional boundaries, procedures, and resources to maintain a safe environment for teaching and learning. Course includes components of state requirements for certification.

Outcomes

1. This course will prepare students to:
2. Apply knowledge of constitutional rights, federal regulations related to public schools, Washington State public school law, and examples of public school district policy in Washington to professional decisions.
3. Analyze legal resources in order to support and positively include families recently immigrated or who have children with special needs.
4. Demonstrate understanding of the laws affecting education of recent immigrants and students with special needs in order to positively include them in the learning community.
5. Evaluate the requirements for identifying and reporting suspected issues of abuse and neglect.
6. Analyze multiple perspectives on controversial topic related to public school law in order to build understanding of relationships with students and families.
