COUN 719 Teaching in Higher Education

This course focuses on models, perspectives, research, and skills pertaining to effective teaching in higher education. Issues covered will relate to values, beliefs, pedagogical/andragogical skills, learning styles, as well as how to structure, deliver, and evaluate instruction within a pluralistic environment.

Methods of instruction primarily feature in-class learning with some asynchronous online activities.

  1. This course will prepare students to:
  2. a) Discuss current trends, models, and perspectives in higher education that impact teaching in higher education.
  3. b) Identify ethical, legal, and social justice issues associated with teaching in higher education.
  4. c) Analyze and synthesize current learning theories, and formulate a personal philosophy of course planning, teaching and learning.
  5. d) Apply scholarly practices in teaching using accreditation standards and competencies that guide curriculum and program evaluation in the counseling profession.
