COUN 729 Advanced Group Work
This course introduces and examines advanced theoretical and practical approaches to group therapy in a pluralistic and evolving society. This course provides opportunities for students to investigate and integrate in-depth knowledge, awareness, and skills of the theoretical foundations of group work while also implementing supervisory models for group counseling practitioners.
Methods of instruction primarily feature in-class learning with some asynchronous online activities.
Outcomes
- This course will prepare students to:
- a) Apply theoretical approaches to group counseling/psychotherapy, including best practices related to management of group dynamics and process.
- b) Utilize integrated knowledge of group development stages, therapeutic factors in groups, and group process dynamics to design groups for various clienteles, clinical issues, and settings in a pluralistic and evolving society.
- c) Develop a personal approach to group work, client change, and group supervisory skills.
- d) Apply ethical considerations unique to group work and group supervision, utilizing ethical codes, best practices in group work, and diversity-competent principles for group workers and supervisors.
