COUN 785 Advanced Qualitative Methods

In this course, students explore and identify a specific qualitative-focused or action-research-focused dissertation question(s), identifying specific methodology and data analysis methods for their dissertation study. Students construct a proposed dissertation prospectus to include a brief literature review, justification of the project, research question(s), identified population, instrument(s), data analysis method(s), and ethical and legal considerations in a pluralistic and evolving society.

Methods of instruction primarily feature in-class learning with some asynchronous online activities.

Prerequisite

Students must successfully pass COUN 760, COUN 770, and COUN 775 prior to enrolling in this course.

Outcomes

  1. This course will prepare students to:
  2. a) Evaluate qualitative research approaches and select an appropriate approach for a specific research question in a pluralistic and evolving society.
  3. b) Finalize research questions related to selected qualitative approach including population and sampling considerations.
  4. c) Identify data collection and analysis methods relevant to their selected qualitative research approach.
  5. d) Integrate principles of ethics and trustworthiness to the qualitative research design to include proposed Institutional Review Board submission.
