COUN 716 Advanced Multicultural and Social Justice Issues

The course introduces current theories of teaching, supervising and counseling from cultural and social justice perspectives in the formation of students’ advanced transcultural integrative approaches to professional practice. Emphasis is on the four American Counseling Association dimensions of multicultural and social justice competences: Counselor self-awareness, client worldview, counseling relationship, and counseling and advocacy interventions.

Methods of instruction primarily feature in-class learning with some asynchronous online activities.

Outcomes

1. This course will prepare students to:
2. a) Discuss issues regarding diversity and the impact of marginalization, discrimination, racism, and oppression on diverse populations.
3. b) Evaluate current pedagogical/andragogical approaches toward multicultural competence and social justice advocacy in counselor education environments.
4. c) Analyze the potential impact of personal cultural identities (e.g. racial/ethnic, social, sexual orientation, age, gender, physical disability, religious and spiritual identification) on future practice as counselors, counselor educators, and supervisors.
5. d) Utilize scholarly literature on social change theory, advocacy models, and advocacy action planning to develop and evaluate action plans and interventions to create social change.
