COUN 723 Advanced Counseling Theories

This course is for doctoral level counseling students to engage in the advanced study of traditional, contemporary, and emergent theories in counseling including family systems theories. Students engage in deep exploration and analysis of various counseling theories to create greater understanding of theoretically based case-conceptualization and application of theory-based interventions from the mental-wellness perspective of a clinician, supervisor, and counselor educator in a pluralistic and evolving society.

Methods of instruction primarily feature in-class learning with some asynchronous online activities.

Outcomes

  1. This course will prepare students to:
  2. a) Conceptualize human wellness, problems, and resolutions from a variety of theoretical perspectives that consider and integrate current research and cultural context in a pluralistic and evolving society.
  3. b) Apply current major theoretical models to conceptualize and treat individuals, couples, and families and critically assessing the models’ multicultural utility, worldview applications, and ethical constructs.
