COUN 729 Advanced Group Work

This course introduces and examines advanced theoretical and practical approaches to group therapy in a pluralistic and evolving society. This course provides opportunities for students to investigate and integrate in-depth knowledge, awareness, and skills of the theoretical foundations of group work while also implementing supervisory models for group counseling practitioners.

Methods of instruction primarily feature in-class learning with some asynchronous online activities.

Outcomes

1. This course will prepare students to:
2. a) Apply theoretical approaches to group counseling/psychotherapy, including best practices related to management of group dynamics and process.
3. b) Utilize integrated knowledge of group development stages, therapeutic factors in groups, and group process dynamics to design groups for various clienteles, clinical issues, and settings in a pluralistic and evolving society.
4. c) Develop a personal approach to group work, client change, and group supervisory skills.
5. d) Apply ethical considerations unique to group work and group supervision, utilizing ethical codes, best practices in group work, and diversity-competent principles for group workers and supervisors.
